ANOTHER WEEK OFF

We didn't bowl last week because it was Christmas Eve. Tonight it's New Year's Eve so we're off for a second consecutive week. I must admit I don't like it. I'd much rather be bowling. We'll finally be back in action next week. The following week will bring us the first half position round. That's all I have for now. In the absence of any league news, I'll throw a few stat graphs at you.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #16

Free Agents: 1 - Roll Players: 3
We averaged 202 as a team so we must have nailed down at least a couple of wins.... Well, not quite. Our opponents, Roll Players had a very good night. We started out with a respectable score of 823 for a win. We followed that up with an 832 which turned out to be our highest score of the season that resulted in a loss. We tailed off in the final game while Roll Players stayed hot to take the series from us, 3-1. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to your opponents and this was one of those nights. We bowled well but the Roll Players bowled a little better.

Our record fell to 36-28 but we held onto seventh place for what it's worth.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #15

Free Agents: 2 - Too Raw: 2
Dietrich was out of action and Too Raw has a vacant spot in the lineup so we bowled 3-on-3. We bowled well but Too Raw had the hot hand in the second and third games. Our margin of victory in the first game was enough for us to hang onto the point for total pinfall but just barely -- it was a margin of seven pins. The split left us with a record of 35-25 and we dropped from fifth to seventh place in the standings. We're ten points out of first place and eight points out of second. If we're going to have a shot in the position round, we'll have to pick up the pace.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #14

Free Agents: 1 - Team 10: 3
We weren't able to follow up on last week's success as Team 10 took three of four from us. We got off to a slow start in the opening game while our opponents had the hot hand. We spotted them a handicap of 105 and they beat us without it. With the handicap, it was a crushing 143-pin defeat. That gave us a tall mountain to climb for anything better than a split.

We evened the series by winning the second game and our 94-pin margin of victory gave us a fair shot at pulling out a 3-1 series victory. We would have to win the third game by at least 50 pins to earn the point for total pinfall.

Unfortunately, Team 10 wasn't very cooperative in the final game. Our performance tailed off and they nearly beat us scratch as they did in the first game. With the handicap, it was a 100-pin defeat and we finished with only the point from winning the second game.

Entering the night, our record for the season was 32-20 which put us in fifth place. We were five points behind the league leaders, 5Ft Nothins, and three points from second place. Now our record is 33-23 and we likely slipped in the standings.

EILEEN'S BOWLING BUDDY

Ashly Galante endorses Eileen's Bowling Buddy

You might have noticed me swinging a warmup tool before we took our practice shots the past few weeks. Will certainly had a good laugh about it last night. Eileen's Bowling Buddy is bowling's version of the bat donut you see baseball players use in the on deck circle. I found an advertisement for it in the October 2013 edition of Bowling World magazine and thought it looked intriguing. After viewing the videos on their website, I figured it was worth a flier.

Bowlers are almost never seen doing any warm up excercises before they bowl. Most warm up by bowling. You may see a few bowlers stretch a little but that's about it. I'm about a week away from my 54th birthday and for the past few years, I've found I feel tight and achy through my first dozen or so deliveries. That's no longer the case since I picked up a Bowling Buddy. I swing this thing for a couple of five minute intervals before we take our practice shots and I'm limbered up and ready to go from the start.

I also picked up one for my Dad who is 82 and still bowling. Besides warming up with it before he bowls, he swings it several times during the day while he's at home watching TV. He says it has helped his arm swing and his balance in addition to the benefit of loosening up before he bowls. So go ahead and laugh at my new toy if you like but give it a few swings and you'll wish you had one.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #13

Free Agents: 3 - No F*ing Around: 1
We needed to rebound after the butt-kicking we took from Lois Lanes last week. The night started well, as we won the first two games and held a 119 edge in total pins. However, a sweep was not to be as we took gas in the final game and barely held onto the point for total pins. By winning three points, we improved our record to 32-20. The league stat sheet hasn't been posted yet so I don't know our position in the standings. I will link to it once it becomes available.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #12

Free Agents: 0 - Lois Lanes: 4
The Lois Lanes brought their brooms and swept us away. We nearly salvaged a win in the final game but our small lead slipped away in the tenth frame. Our three splits combined with Cindy Cosco's clutch salvo of strikes put the final nail in our coffin.

We entered the night in a first-place tie with a record of 29-15. There was a tight cluster at or near the top as nine teams were within three points of first place. After tonight's sweep, we fell to 29-19 and eighth place, four points behind the leaders.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #11

Free Agents: 2 - ALB Nitemare: 2
Paced by Will's excellent 690 series, we averaged 202 as a team. One might assume it would lead us to three or four points. Not so fast -- though we bowled well, we had the misfortune of running into the Edwin Sinn buzzsaw. Edwin put up scores of 259-256-246 for an amazing 761 series. We managed to win only the second game. Luckily for us, the margin of victory was large enough to earn us the extra point for total pinfall and a series split.

Entering Week #11, our record of 27-13 put us in first place with a one point lead over The Hostages (Team 7) and Unpredictable (Team 23). Three more teams were tied for fourth place, two points behind us. Our record is now 29-15 and it's likely we lost our tenuous grip on first place.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #10 RESULTS

Free Agents: 3 - We Got This: 1
We had to bowl this one without Dietrich and it was a night we weren't at our sharpest. We Got This hammered us by 107 pins in the first game so we were immediately in a deep hole. We pulled out the second game by a score of 797-796 but we remained at a 106 pin disadvantage for the series. Thankfully, We Got This cooled off in the final game and we won it by 120.

With a margin of victory of one pin in the second game and fourteen pins in the series, we were very lucky to come out of it 3-1. It could quite easily have gone the other way. We were also lucky that our closest competitors were beaten which allowed us to move into first place with a record of 27-13. Two teams are right behind us at 26-14.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #9

Free Agents: 3 - Honor: 1
It was a fortunate night for us. Dietrich had to bowl with borrowed equipment and we put up our lowest score of the season. All the ingredients for a bad night were present. Somehow, we overcame the obstacles to win 3 of the 4 points. That wasn't the limit of our good fortune -- the two teams ahead of us were swept. As a result, we passed one of them and moved to within one point of first place.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #8

Free Agents: 4 - Farmer's Market: 0
Our success in October continued with a sweep of Farmer's Market.  For the second consecutive week, we exceeded our previous high game and for the third consecutive week we exceeded our previous high series. The high game (931) and series (2512) are also the high marks for the league.

Our sweep moved us into a third place tie with Roll Players at 21-11. We didn't gain any ground on The Hostages who are in first place (25-7) but we closed within 2 points of No Ketchup who presently hold second place (23-9).

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #7

Free Agents: 3 - Team 13: 1
Entering this week's play, we held a record of 14-10, 4-1/2 points behind the league leaders in 10th place. Our opponents were Team 13 who were in 21st place with a record of 11-13. We spotted them 163 pins per game in handicap.

We started slowly and Team 13 jumped on us quickly to win the first game by 81 pins. We came alive in the second game with a score of 900 (our high of the season) to win by 199. We cooled off a bit in the third game but still won it by 48 pins. We earned the point for total pinfall which gave us a 3-1 edge on the night. This improved our record to 17-11.

After a slow start in September, we are 10-2 in October and moving steadily toward the top of the standings.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #6

Free Agents: 4 - Team 30: 0
We started the night in 15th place with a record of 10-10. Our opponents were Team 30 with a record of 6-14.  We came out strong in the first two games before fading in the third. Despite the fade, we were good enough to top our previous high series by 8 pins and earn all four points. Our record improved to 14-10 which moved us from 15th to 10th in the standings..

Next week we have Team 13 on the schedule and my best estimate says we'll be spotting them about 163 pins.

We're 7-1 in October. Can we retain our hot hand?

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #5

Free Agents: 3 - Really!!!!!: 1
This week we faced REALLY!!!!! (Team 34) on lanes 3-4. They had a new bowler, Doug Holley, filling their previously vacant spot on the roster. We were told he was establishing his average with the three games bowled that night. I believe this is incorrect. Doug Holley is a USBC member with a book average of 193 from the 2011-2012 season and 194 from the 2013 summer season at Pinole Valley Lanes. The 194 average in the 2013 summer season was from 42 games bowled in a scratch league. I believe his average for handicapping purposes must be based on his established average of 193 or 194 and not the 3-game aberration that took place last night. I sent an eamil to Mike Richards and we'll see if he agrees with my opinion.

Anyway, the figures below assume an average of 194 for Doug which gives REALLY!!!!! a handicap of 106 pins per game. If they are inexplicably allowed to use Doug's scores from last night to determine his average, it would be 179 and they would instead get a handicap of 119. This change would not affect the outcome of any of the games.

We lost the first game but won games two and three by a margin great enough to earn us the extra point for total pinfall. Our record of 3-1 for the night improved our record for the season to 10-10.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #4

Free Agents: 1 - 5Ft Nothins: 3
We entered the fourth week of the season with a record of 6-6. Our opponents were 5Ft Nothins who held a record of 8-4. We spotted them a handicap of 47 pins per game.

5Ft Nothins started out hot and threw us a 74-pin beating in the first game. We nearly evened the series in the second game but 5Ft Nothins held on to win by 7 pins. To earn a split, we'd have to win the third game by 82 pins. We gave it a good shot by scoring our high game (and series) of the young season but it wasn't enough to earn a split. Our margin of victory was only 70 so the point for total pinfall went to 5Ft Nothins. We managed only one point for Week #4 and our record fell to 7-9.

The pivotal point of the night was Roger's second shot in the tenth frame of the second game. He was the last to bowl and his first shot of the tenth frame left a 10-pin. The nine count cut our lead to 809-808. If Roger failed to convert the 10-pin, the second game was ours. If he converted it and kept his bonus shot on the lane, the victory was theirs. Roger was clutch and picked up his 10-pin to earn the win for his team. That one shot demonstrated how thin the margin may be between a record of 3-1 and 1-3.

MIKE ROCHA TRIOS - WEEK #13 (FINAL) RESULTS

Will To Win: 2 - Team 1: 5
This was the position round to end the season and we were matched up with Team 1 who occupied third place. Entering the night, we were in fourth place, one game behind Team 1. We had to beat them 5-2 or better to move into third place. We didn't have one of our better nights and we ended up 2-5. Despite the off-night, we managed to hold onto fourth place with a record of 49-42.

The game/series scores were 558-691; 608-627; 618-581; 1784-1899.

Eli PBA finished the summer season with an exceptional average of 205.

LEAGUE STAT SHEET

We were caught up in our own match with Team 1 so we didn't notice what was brewing on the lanes immediately to our left -- Team 5 had an extremely tight battle with Team 10 for first place. Team 10 won the first game by a score of 567-566 but Team 5 won the second game 623-621. They split the first two games and were separated by a single pin for the series score. In the rubber game, Team 5 turned it on to win 618-548. Team 5 finished 59-32 to Team 10's 57-34.

OCTOBER MADNESS TRIOS TOURNAMENT

If you click the TOURNAMENTS tab above (or the "Upcoming Tournaments" link in the right column), you'll see the flier for an interesting tournament at Granada Bowl covering three weekends in October. The entry fee of $60.00 may look a bit steep but it's actually three tournaments in one. The four games bowled for each three-member team will count for singles and doubles as well as trios.

HOT SPOT - WEEK #12 (FINAL) RESULTS

Strike Force: 3 - Team 19: 1
This was the final week of the regular season and we had an outside shot at first place. From third place, we would have to sweep Team 19 while Team 20 took 3 of 4 from Team 23. We gave it our best shot, scoring our high game and high series of the season but it wasn't enough. Team 23 swept Team 20 so all we could do was play for second place.

Dietrich's 701 series along with Kimlang's 636 pushed us to a 3-1 record for the night. With Team 20 losing 0-4 to Team 23, we leapfrogged past them into second place. Our game/series scores were 892-832; 732-775; 781-748; 2405-2355.

We shouldn't be too disappointed with our second place finish in this short summer league. It was unfortunate that we were off our game in Week #11 and cost ourselves a head-to-head match up with Team 23 in the position round. Still, We bowled very well most of the time and there's certainly no shame in finishing behind a team of four very good bowlers.

MIKE ROCHA TRIOS - WEEK #12 RESULTS

Will To Win: 7 - Team 5: 0
Eli PBA continued to hold the hot hand and unlike last week, he didn't have the burden of carrying the team by himself. Well, he had to carry me in the first half of the first game but after that, I got back on track. Will returned to form also after he and I tanked last week. It was needed because our opponents were Team 5 who sat all alone in first place. They spotted us 11 pins in handicap which we needed only in the first game as we earned a sweep.

The game/series scores were 610-601; 675-636; 613-544; 1898-1781. Eli was three pins short of a 700 and Will hit 600 on the nose.

HOT SPOT - WEEK #11 RESULTS

Strike Zone: 0 - Team 6: 4

Ouch! That one really hurt. We were sitting pretty after last week's sweep propelled us to a 1-1/2 point lead in the standings. Then last night we went into a funk that leaves us with only a remote chance of finishing in first place.

A seemingly endless string of splits, washouts, and chops sent us spiraling to defeat in the first two games. We pulled out of it in the third game but at the same time, our opponents stepped up to keep themselves just beyond our reach. Kelly's 240 score in the third game was the crushing blow. The game/series scores were 655-734; 713-725; 798-817; 2166-2276. Our record fell to 30.5-13.5.

I don't have confirmation yet but I heard Team 23 went 2-2 (31-13), Team 20 went 3-1 (31-13), and Team 19 went 4-0 (31-13). If so, it appears we have fallen to fourth place, half a point behind three teams in a first place tie. Next week is the final series before the sweeper and it's a position round. I believe we will be in the second pairing (third place vs fourth place). To finish first, we'll need to sweep our opponent while the first and second place teams split or go 3-1. If either the first or second place team gets the upper hand and sweeps the other, it will put them beyond our reach. If they split, a 3-1 night for us may get us to the top by half a point.  In any event, we absolutely need to bring our A+ game and hope for some help.

LOOKS LIKE SOME OF THE JUNK I LEFT LAST NIGHT

MIKE ROCHA TRIOS - WEEK #11 RESULTS

Will To Win: 0 - Team 8: 7

Eli bowled well but Will and I were in a funk all night. We couldn't afford to be off our game because Mike Rocha put up a 728 series for the opposition. The result was a 7-point sweep at the hands of Team 8. The game/series scores were 481-575; 566-589; 489-693; 1536-1857.

Our record for the season fell to 40-37. We held onto fourth place but we all but eliminated any chance we had of climbing to the top. We have three weeks left. Next week we take on the first place team, the following week is the position round, and the third week is our sweeper.

HOT SPOT - WEEK #10 RESULTS

Strike Force: 4 - Stereophonix: 0
Dietrich was out of the lineup this week but we overcame his absence to score our high series of the season and earn a sweep.

Team 23 entered the night with a 1/2 point lead over us while Team 19 was 1-1/2 points behind us. If Team 23 failed to sweep Team 30, we're back in first place. I didn't stick around long enough to see how they finished. I will link the league stat sheet once it's posted to leaguesecretary.com.

The game/series scores were 792-760; 821-784; 766-670; 2379-2214.

MIKE ROCHA TRIOS - WEEK #10 RESULTS

Will To Win: 7 - Fox & Hounds: 0
Fox & Hounds were without their fox and one hound as Guy was on his own. He could have used their help -- each came was a close one with the outcome in doubt until the final shots. Fortunately for us, we had a full crew and we came out on top each game.

The sweep moved us up to fourth place, one game out of third. The game/series scores were 598-573; 603-583; 583-682; 1784-1718.

HOT SPOT - WEEK #9

Strike Force: 2 - Team 8: 2
It was difficult night for us beginning with mechanical failures in the opening game that forced us to move to a different pair of lanes. Will and Kimlang bowled very well while Dietrich and I struggled. In the end, we split 2-2, claiming the first game and the point for total pinfall. The game/series scores were 803-756; 755-773; 752-767; 2310-2296.

MIKE ROCHA TRIOS - WEEK #9 RESULTS

Will To Win: 3 - Team 9: 4
We entered the night tied for third place with a record of 30-26. It isn't obvious from the outcome but we bowled well. Unfortunately for us, Team 9 bowled just a little bit better. We scored over 600 in each game but managed to win only one of the three. We were nearly evenly match with our opponents who spotted us six pins in handicap.

In the first game, Jerry and Eric shot 232 and 259 respectively which was more than enough to offset Will's excellent 233 game. Paced by Eli's 265, we turned it up to claim the second game. In the rubber game of the match, we were good but Eric struck out in the tenth frame to edge us by four pins. Though we lost the first and third games, our margin of victory in the second game was enough to earn the point for total pinfall and a record of 3-4 for the night. Our record for the season is 33-30.

The game/series scores were 608-650; 653-600; 622-626; 1883-1876. Will shot his high series and Eli shot his high game for the the summer season.
