HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #28

Free Agents: 1 - We've Been Framed: 3
I don't know that I've ever seen a team surrender a handicap of 253 pins per game before but that's what we did Tuesday night against We've Been Framed. Will was absent for us and our opponents had only Lisa and Bryan present so we finished early.

We started slowly and this made that 253 handicap tough to catch. The first game was a loss. The second game didn't go much better except Kimlang stepped up with a 247 to pull out a come-from-behind victory. Dietrich joined Kimlang with the hot hand in the final game while I remained in my funk. Our score of 818 was certainly respectable but Lisa and Bryan turned it up for opponents also. We held the lead entering the tenth frame but Dietrich left a split and I followed by chopping the 6 off of a 6-10. This time it was too much for Kimlang to overcome with his tenth frame heroics. We also lost the point for total pinfall.

I hope to soon fight my way out of the slump I've been battling the past few weeks. I'm planning to do a lot of practicing this weekend.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #27

Free Agents: 0 - All Madden: 4
We had our full squad present for the first time in a month but it didn't save us from the slaughter we faced this week. All Madden came out firing on all cylinders while we remained in our extended slump. They shot 267 pins over average while we shot 119 under average. That's a lethal combination when spotting the opposition 61 pins. As one would expect from these figures, we were swept. The losses were by 40, 232, and 93 pins. We fell to 32nd place with a record of 13.5-22.5. At this point in the season, I think we're resigned to bowling for pride and enjoyment of the game. Any chance we had of finishing in first place is dead.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #25

Free Agents: 3 - Pinheads: 1
Dietrich's hand injury held him out for a third consecutive week. We started slowly and lost the first game but rebounded from there to win 3 of 4 for the night. Is this our first step toward turning the corner and making a run at first place? Time will tell.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #24

Free Agents: 1 - Blood Money 3
Dietrich was out of action for a second consecutive week following a hand injury. This was a series we could have won but we weren't sharp this night with the exception of Kimlang's outstanding 268 in the final game. Unfortunately, Kimlang didn't get any help from the rest of the team and we came up six pins short of earning a split.

This has been a rough week for me. My mom passed away Wednesday morning and my mind has been in a fog since then. I bowled 501 Friday and 496 Monday. I hate bowling like this.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #23

Free Agents: 0 - Team 14: 4
Week #23 brought us a tough challenge. Our scores have been down and we've fallen into a slump just as we face the top team in the league. That would be Matt Kish and his mates with a record of 13-3. Our record stood at 8-8 after losing 7 of our last 8.

Dietrich was out of action again this week so the challenge became even greater. Unfortunately, this would not be the night we pulled out of our slump. We hovered right around our average in the first two games and we shot well in the third but it wasn't enough to earn a single point. Our opponents were on their game and we weren't able to keep up. The sweep left us spiraling toward the cellar with a 1-11 record over the past three weeks.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #22

Free Agents: 1 - Make It Happen: 3
Make It Happen made it happen and we were nearly swept for the second consecutive week. Dietrich and Kimlang rescued us with a couple of big scores in the final to pull out a win. Our once promising second half start is but a faded memory as we're now in eighteenth place with a record of 8-8.

There's no doubt we've hit a bump in the road. However, there's still plenty of time to pull it back together. Next week we'll take on league leading Team 14.  It's not likely we'll earn any wins against Matt Kish's squad if we continue putting up scores like 728. We'll have to turn it up a notch or two to get back on track.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #21

Free Agents: 0 - No Ketchup: 4
The momentum we built the two previous weeks hit a roadblock called No Ketchup. We showed up in second place with a record of 7-1 but on this night we found ourselves on the wrong end of a sweep  There was an opportunity to win the first game but we fell ten pins short. I don't know if that loss took the wind out of our sails but we were beaten soundly in the next two games.

Our second half record fell to 7-5 and we slipped from second place to a three-way tie for fifteenth place. We can't afford too many nights like this one if we intend to win the league championship.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #20

Free Agents: 3 - It Could Happen: 1
We split with It Could Happen a couple of weeks ago in the position round. We bowled without Will that time. Will was back with us for the rematch and we won three of four.

The conditions were less than ideal because the cooling fan wasn't working for our lanes. This became a problem for some of us when Albany Bowl became hot and humid as the night wore on. But it was a problem for both teams so we can't say we suffered a disadvantage from it.

By winning three of four we improved our second half record to 7-1 which put us in second place.  Next week we take on No Ketchup on lucky lanes 13-14.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #19

Free Agents: 4 - Happy Bowlers: 0
This was the nineteenth week of the season and the first week of the second half. The standings were reset to 0-0 and we got off to a good start with a 4-0 sweep of Happy Bowlers (Team #4). Dietrich set the pace by topping his previous high series. Sitting on 490 after two games, it looked like a 700 series might be attained but the 10-pin refused to cooperate in the final game.

Looking at our team performance, we were consistent with all three games a bit above our team average of 788. For the season thus far, we're reaching 200 in 41.7% of our games and 600 in 40.3% of our series. Next week we have a rematch with It Could Happen. We met them just last week in the first half position round.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #18 (POSITION ROUND)

Free Agents: 2 - It Could Happen: 2

We ended the first half of the season with a position round. As the sixth place team, we were paired up with It Could Happen (Team 28) who were a point ahead of us in fifth place. Will was out of action so his average of 194 was used in his absence. The handicap was 78 pins to It Could Happen.

We started out well and won the first game by 50 pins. In the second game, everything fell apart. Our score of 666 was our lowest of the season by far. At the same time, It Could Happen put up their high game of the season. When you throw in the handicap, it amounted to a crushing defeat of 178 pins. We rebounded to a respectable score of 825 to win the third game but it was well short of what we needed to earn the point for total pins. Thus, the end result was a split and a first half record of 40-32.

A few lanes over, Unpredictable (Team 23) won the first half title which guaranteed them a minimum payout of $2,000.00 for the season. They will take on the winners of the second half for the league championship in May.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #17

Free Agents: 2 - Team 35: 2
It was good to be back in action after two weeks off. Our opponents were Team 35 whom we spotted 93 pins. Both teams bowled well and the final outcome was a 2-2 series split. We lost the first and third games but our margin of victory in the second game was high enough to earn the point for total pinfall. Kimlang's 715 series was our first 700+ series of the season.

Next week we have a position round to end the first half of the season. We entered this week in seventh place with a record of 36-26. Our split leaves us at 38-28 which is well short of a shot at first place.

ANOTHER WEEK OFF

We didn't bowl last week because it was Christmas Eve. Tonight it's New Year's Eve so we're off for a second consecutive week. I must admit I don't like it. I'd much rather be bowling. We'll finally be back in action next week. The following week will bring us the first half position round. That's all I have for now. In the absence of any league news, I'll throw a few stat graphs at you.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #16

Free Agents: 1 - Roll Players: 3
We averaged 202 as a team so we must have nailed down at least a couple of wins.... Well, not quite. Our opponents, Roll Players had a very good night. We started out with a respectable score of 823 for a win. We followed that up with an 832 which turned out to be our highest score of the season that resulted in a loss. We tailed off in the final game while Roll Players stayed hot to take the series from us, 3-1. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to your opponents and this was one of those nights. We bowled well but the Roll Players bowled a little better.

Our record fell to 36-28 but we held onto seventh place for what it's worth.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #15

Free Agents: 2 - Too Raw: 2
Dietrich was out of action and Too Raw has a vacant spot in the lineup so we bowled 3-on-3. We bowled well but Too Raw had the hot hand in the second and third games. Our margin of victory in the first game was enough for us to hang onto the point for total pinfall but just barely -- it was a margin of seven pins. The split left us with a record of 35-25 and we dropped from fifth to seventh place in the standings. We're ten points out of first place and eight points out of second. If we're going to have a shot in the position round, we'll have to pick up the pace.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #14

Free Agents: 1 - Team 10: 3
We weren't able to follow up on last week's success as Team 10 took three of four from us. We got off to a slow start in the opening game while our opponents had the hot hand. We spotted them a handicap of 105 and they beat us without it. With the handicap, it was a crushing 143-pin defeat. That gave us a tall mountain to climb for anything better than a split.

We evened the series by winning the second game and our 94-pin margin of victory gave us a fair shot at pulling out a 3-1 series victory. We would have to win the third game by at least 50 pins to earn the point for total pinfall.

Unfortunately, Team 10 wasn't very cooperative in the final game. Our performance tailed off and they nearly beat us scratch as they did in the first game. With the handicap, it was a 100-pin defeat and we finished with only the point from winning the second game.

Entering the night, our record for the season was 32-20 which put us in fifth place. We were five points behind the league leaders, 5Ft Nothins, and three points from second place. Now our record is 33-23 and we likely slipped in the standings.

EILEEN'S BOWLING BUDDY

Ashly Galante endorses Eileen's Bowling Buddy

You might have noticed me swinging a warmup tool before we took our practice shots the past few weeks. Will certainly had a good laugh about it last night. Eileen's Bowling Buddy is bowling's version of the bat donut you see baseball players use in the on deck circle. I found an advertisement for it in the October 2013 edition of Bowling World magazine and thought it looked intriguing. After viewing the videos on their website, I figured it was worth a flier.

Bowlers are almost never seen doing any warm up excercises before they bowl. Most warm up by bowling. You may see a few bowlers stretch a little but that's about it. I'm about a week away from my 54th birthday and for the past few years, I've found I feel tight and achy through my first dozen or so deliveries. That's no longer the case since I picked up a Bowling Buddy. I swing this thing for a couple of five minute intervals before we take our practice shots and I'm limbered up and ready to go from the start.

I also picked up one for my Dad who is 82 and still bowling. Besides warming up with it before he bowls, he swings it several times during the day while he's at home watching TV. He says it has helped his arm swing and his balance in addition to the benefit of loosening up before he bowls. So go ahead and laugh at my new toy if you like but give it a few swings and you'll wish you had one.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #13

Free Agents: 3 - No F*ing Around: 1
We needed to rebound after the butt-kicking we took from Lois Lanes last week. The night started well, as we won the first two games and held a 119 edge in total pins. However, a sweep was not to be as we took gas in the final game and barely held onto the point for total pins. By winning three points, we improved our record to 32-20. The league stat sheet hasn't been posted yet so I don't know our position in the standings. I will link to it once it becomes available.

HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #12

Free Agents: 0 - Lois Lanes: 4
The Lois Lanes brought their brooms and swept us away. We nearly salvaged a win in the final game but our small lead slipped away in the tenth frame. Our three splits combined with Cindy Cosco's clutch salvo of strikes put the final nail in our coffin.

We entered the night in a first-place tie with a record of 29-15. There was a tight cluster at or near the top as nine teams were within three points of first place. After tonight's sweep, we fell to 29-19 and eighth place, four points behind the leaders.

TUESDAY HOT SPOT #1 - WEEK #11

Free Agents: 2 - ALB Nitemare: 2
Paced by Will's excellent 690 series, we averaged 202 as a team. One might assume it would lead us to three or four points. Not so fast -- though we bowled well, we had the misfortune of running into the Edwin Sinn buzzsaw. Edwin put up scores of 259-256-246 for an amazing 761 series. We managed to win only the second game. Luckily for us, the margin of victory was large enough to earn us the extra point for total pinfall and a series split.

Entering Week #11, our record of 27-13 put us in first place with a one point lead over The Hostages (Team 7) and Unpredictable (Team 23). Three more teams were tied for fourth place, two points behind us. Our record is now 29-15 and it's likely we lost our tenuous grip on first place.
